Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and Tips

Why should I have maintenance on my HVAC units? And how often?

Performing annual maintenance on your heating and cooling systems is important. Today's units are very complicated. The system's operation requires continuous stopping, starting and working exceptionally hard to maintain the comfort level you should expect. Regular maintenance helps the extend the lifespan of your unit(s), avoids failure during the height of each season, and ensures energy efficiency which saves money on your utility bills.

We recommend that air conditioners and heat pumps have a tune-up once a year. Today's gas-fired units are manufactured with better efficiency than ever before, so we recommend a tune-up every other year, unless it's an older unit. Oil heating units should be done once a year because it is important to have the filters and nozzles replaced.

What should I expect from a professional tune-up on my heating and cooling systems?

Heat pumps and air conditioning unit tune-ups should include inspections of the fan, compressor, indoor and outdoor coils and refrigerant lines. Your unit(s) should be pressure tested to ensure it is working at its highest efficiency. Both gas and heating oil boilers or furnace tune-ups should include inspection of the ductwork, pipes, dampers, valves, chimney, registers, radiators, pumps, blowers, fuel lines, filters, and nozzles.

What type of filter should I use? And how often should I replace it?

There are many types of filters. A basic filter keeps your system and its ductwork clean, but is not meant to improve indoor air quality. The best air filter to guarantee whole house filtration is a media filter. Media filters are sandwiched between the main return duct and the blower's cabinet. As the air flows through the system, the Media Air Cleaner traps particles as small as 1.0 micron, including pollen, dust and dander. Media Air Systems can clean the air in your home year-round, even when not heating or cooling your home. The pleated media filter contains enough air cleaning capacity to clean air without restricting air flow. Media filters are "supercharged" for better efficiency and longer service life. They are moisture resistant and will not support the growth of bacteria or other microbes.

If your filter is disposable, we suggest changing it every 3 months. Washable filters should be cleaned monthly.

What are the benefits of a programmable thermostat?

Electronic programmable thermostats are more precise and efficient than the old mercury thermostats. They give you the option to customize your home's temperature according to your lifestyle. This means that you control your home's temperature at different times of the day for every day of the week – you make your own schedule! For example, if you want the heater or air conditioner to change temperature when you leave for work AND when you return from work - it can do this! Or if you want the temperature to automatically change when you go to sleep and again when you wake up – it can do this too! Because it's automatic you have one less thing to remember and it saves money on your monthly energy bill!

There are also WiFi enabled thermostats which allow you to monitor and adjust your home's heating and cooling system even when you are not at home. Again, this helps you reduce your heating and cooling costs. Read more about Thermostats.

If my heating or cooling unit isn't working properly, what can I do before scheduling a service call?

Here at Ward Heating, Air Conditioning and Heating Oil, we want our customers to be comfortable as soon as possible! So before you schedule a service call and incur an unnecessary expense, try the following tips. But if you still need or want us to come out, call us 7 days per week and we'll be happy to!

Central Air Conditioning:

  • Make sure your thermostat is set on "Cooling" and "Auto".
  • Make sure the circuit breaker in the electrical box are on.
  • Check the thermostat's batteries.
  • If your air conditioning isn't blowing air, Call Us at 856-829-4985.
  • If your air conditioning is blowing WARM air, try the following:
    • Turn off the unit's switch located by the unit (not the thermostat).
    • Wait a couple of minutes.
    • Turn it back on (IMPORTANT: Only Do This ONCE).
    • Give your air conditioner a few minutes to start cooling. Hopefully, this will reboot your system.
  • Still not working? Call Us at 856-829-4985!

Oil Heat (Furnace or Boiler):

  • Make sure your thermostat is set on "Heat" and "Auto".
  • Check the thermostat's batteries.
  • Make sure there's heating oil in the tank.
  • If the thermostat and oil tank are okay, try the following:
    • Hit the Reset (Red Button) on the Burner Control (IMPORTANT: Only Do This ONCE).
    • If the Burner does not fire up, Call Us at 856-829-4985.
  • If it still doesn't work, Call Us!

Gas Heat (Furnace or Boiler):

  • Make sure your thermostat is set on "Heat" and "Auto".
  • Check the thermostat's batteries.
  • If the thermostat is okay, try the following:
    • Turn off the unit (there's usually a switch by the furnace or boiler that might look like a light switch).
    • Wait a few minutes.
    • Turn it back on (IMPORTANT: Only Do This ONCE).
  • Give your heater a few minutes to start heating up.
  • If it still doesn't work, Call Us at 856-829-4985

How do I know if I'm purchasing the right equipment?

Get more than one estimate, and make sure the estimate states all of the following: Manufacturer, Model, B.T.U. (British Thermal Unit), Efficiency, etc. Read our Glossary for a better understanding of HVAC terminology and technology.

The importance of the proper sizing and installation of HVAC systems will determine how long your system will last, how well it will run to maximize efficiency, and how this efficiency will save you money on your monthly energy bills.

How do I compare installation estimates?

  • We recommend getting more than one estimate, which makes comparing clearer.
  • Estimates from each of the HVAC companies should be for the same equipment, size and efficiency, which makes it easier for you to make comparisons.
  • Ask for estimates with different types of efficiencies. Although we highly recommend the highest efficiency possible, we also realize it may not fit your budget. So ask for a "Good, Better and Best" estimate.
  • You should be aware of the size units these estimates are quoting. Remember that undersizing OR oversizing your equipment will affect its efficiency and your comfort!
  • Don't let cost dictate value!
  • It's important to remember that most HVAC contractors can sell you the same equipment, but the quality of the installation will determine the equipment's true quality! You are buying a Contractor!
If you have any other questions about HVAC technology, please feel free to call us at 856-829-4985, and we'll be happy to help you!
