Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some frequently asked questions (FAQ) about Heating and Air Conditioning in South Jersey. Contact Ward Heating, Air Conditioning, and Heating Oil if you have any questions.

Why should I have maintenance on my HVAC units? And how often?

Performing annual maintenance on your heating and cooling systems is important. Today's units are very complicated. The system's operation requires continuous stopping, starting and working exceptionally hard to maintain the comfort level you should expect. Regular maintenance helps the extend the lifespan of your unit(s), avoids failure during the height of each season, and ensures energy efficiency which saves money on your utility bills.

We recommend that air conditioners and heat pumps have a tune-up once a year. Today's gas-fired units are manufactured with better efficiency than ever before, so we recommend a tune-up every other year, unless it's an older unit. Oil heating units should be done once a year because it is important to have the filters and nozzles replaced.

What should I expect from a professional tune-up on my heating and cooling systems?

Heat pumps and air conditioning unit tune-ups should include inspections of the fan, compressor, indoor and outdoor coils and refrigerant lines. Your unit(s) should be pressure tested to ensure it is working at its highest efficiency. Both gas and heating oil boilers or furnace tune-ups should include inspection of the ductwork, pipes, dampers, valves, chimney, registers, radiators, pumps, blowers, fuel lines, filters, and nozzles.

What type of filter should I use? And how often should I replace it?

There are many types of filters. A basic filter keeps your system and its ductwork clean, but is not meant to improve indoor air quality. The best air filter to guarantee whole house filtration is a media filter. Media filters are sandwiched between the main return duct and the blower's cabinet. As the air flows through the system, the Media Air Cleaner traps particles as small as 1.0 micron, including pollen, dust and dander. Media Air Systems can clean the air in your home year-round, even when not heating or cooling your home. The pleated media filter contains enough air cleaning capacity to clean air without restricting air flow. Media filters are "supercharged" for better efficiency and longer service life. They are moisture resistant and will not support the growth of bacteria or other microbes.

If your filter is disposable, we suggest changing it every 3 months. Washable filters should be cleaned monthly.

What are the benefits of a programmable thermostat?

Electronic programmable thermostats are more precise and efficient than the old mercury thermostats. They give you the option to customize your home's temperature according to your lifestyle. This means that you control your home's temperature at different times of the day for every day of the week – you make your own schedule! For example, if you want the heater or air conditioner to change temperature when you leave for work AND when you return from work - it can do this! Or if you want the temperature to automatically change when you go to sleep and again when you wake up – it can do this too! Because it's automatic you have one less thing to remember and it saves money on your monthly energy bill!

There are also WiFi enabled thermostats which allow you to monitor and adjust your home's heating and cooling system even when you are not at home. Again, this helps you reduce your heating and cooling costs. Read more about Thermostats.

How do I know if I'm purchasing the right equipment?

Get more than one estimate, and make sure the estimate states all of the following: Manufacturer, Model, B.T.U. (British Thermal Unit), Efficiency, etc. Read our Glossary for a better understanding of HVAC terminology and technology.

The importance of the proper sizing and installation of HVAC systems will determine how long your system will last, how well it will run to maximize efficiency, and how this efficiency will save you money on your monthly energy bills.

How do I compare installation estimates?
